Part 18: Clothes, Colours, Weather & Adjective Endings

GERM202 6 minute read

Source note: Built from the Koç University GERM201/202 course, the A1 video course and Goethe-Institut A1 materials. Where sources disagree or contain an error, this guide uses the correct German and flags the fix under Confusion Points.

0. Overview

This part covers clothes, colours and sizes, buying clothes, and the weather. Describing clothes brings in adjectives before a noun, which need endings. The course teaches these endings in full, the Goethe A1 exam does not test them. Adjectives after sein (no ending) are in Part 14.

TopicKey point
Clothes and coloursder Rock, die Hose, das Hemd
Buying clothesWie gefällt dir …? Das steht dir gut.
WeatherEs regnet. Es ist sonnig. Es sind 20 Grad.

QuestionAnswer
der RockWelcher Rock? / Welchen Rock nimmst du?Dieser. / Diesen.
das KleidWelches Kleid?Dieses.

3. Weather

Ask Wie ist das Wetter? Weather sentences use es as the subject.

NounAdjectiveSentence
die SonnesonnigDie Sonne scheint. Es ist sonnig.
der RegenregnerischEs regnet.
der SchneeEs schneit.
die WolkebewölktEs ist bewölkt.
der WindwindigEs ist windig.

die Hitze, die Kälteheiß, kaltEs ist heiß. Es ist kalt.
  • Degrees are Celsius: Es sind 20 Grad. Es sind minus 5 Grad / 5 Grad unter Null.
  • Forecast: Am Morgen ist es noch kalt. Am Nachmittag wird es warm.
  • Favourite season: Im Sommer ist es warm. Im Winter schneit es oft. Man kann Ski fahren.
  • Reactions: Hoffentlich wird es morgen sonnig. Leider regnet es. Schade!

4. Adjective Endings: Four Questions

An adjective after the noun and sein has no ending: Der Rock ist rot. An adjective before a noun always has one: der rote Rock. The course handout reduces the choice to four questions.

QuestionIf yesExample
1. Is there no article?Take the ending of der / die / dasDeutsches Bier. Ich trinke kalten Kaffee.
2. Has the article changed from the Nominativ?-eneinen guten Mann, mit der netten Frau
3. Is the noun plural?-endie jungen Kinder, keine schönen Schuhe
4. Does the article show the gender?-eder rote Mantel, eine kleine Lampe
4. If not (ein, mein, kein …)-er (masculine), -es (neuter)ein guter Mantel, ein gutes Buch

Work through the questions in order and stop at the first “yes”.

5. The Ending Tables

After der, dieser, welcher:

MasculineFeminineNeuterPlural
Nominativder rote Rockdie rote Blusedas rote Kleiddie roten Schuhe
Akkusativden roten Rockdie rote Blusedas rote Kleiddie roten Schuhe
Dativdem roten Rockder roten Blusedem roten Kleidden roten Schuhen

After ein, kein, mein:

MasculineFeminineNeuterPlural
Nominativein roter Rockeine rote Bluseein rotes Kleidkeine roten Schuhe
Akkusativeinen roten Rockeine rote Bluseein rotes Kleidkeine roten Schuhe
Dativeinem roten Rockeiner roten Bluseeinem roten Kleidkeinen roten Schuhen
  • Only five places take -e after der: the three Nominativ singulars and the feminine and neuter Akkusativ. Everything else is -en.
  • After ein the only differences are -er and -es where ein has no ending.
  • At A1 the course mainly practises the Nominativ and Akkusativ: Die Frau trägt ein weißes T-Shirt, eine schwarze Hose und rote Schuhe.

6. Confusion Points

  • “Regnet. Ist kalt.” Weather sentences need es: Es regnet. Es ist kalt.
  • “Es ist 20 Grad.” The number makes the subject plural: Es sind 20 Grad.
  • “Ich bin kalt.” Your body feeling takes the Dativ: Mir ist kalt. (Part 10)
  • “Der Rock ist roter.” After sein there is no ending: Der Rock ist rot. With a noun after it the ending comes back: ein roter Rock.
  • “ein rote Rock.” ein does not show the masculine, so the adjective must: ein roter Rock.
  • “den rote Rock.” den has changed from der, so the adjective takes -en: den roten Rock.
  • “Unser nette Vater.” The -er of unser is part of the word, not an ending, so it works like mein: unser netter Vater.
  • “viele is an article.” viele is an adjective, so the next adjective follows question 1: viele gute Bücher.
  • “Der Rock gefällt ich.” The person takes the Dativ: Der Rock gefällt mir.
  • “daß.” Since the spelling reform it is dass. One course answer key still uses daß.

7. Quick-Reference Summary

  • Clothes: der Rock, der Pullover, die Hose, die Jacke, das Hemd, das Kleid, die Schuhe.
  • Shopping: Kann ich das anprobieren? Das passt mir nicht. Das steht dir gut. Wie gefällt dir …?
  • welch- / dies-: Welcher Rock? Dieser. Akkusativ masculine: welchen, diesen.
  • Weather: Es regnet / schneit. Es ist sonnig / windig / kalt. Es sind 20 Grad.
  • No ending after sein: Der Rock ist rot.
  • Endings: after der: -e in five places, -en elsewhere. After ein: -er (m.), -es (n.) where ein has no ending.
