0. Overview

This part gives you the words for flats, houses, rooms and furniture, and the adjectives to describe them. It ends with how to give an opinion: Ich finde die Wohnung zu klein. Adjectives here stand after the verb and never change. Adjectives with endings (ein großes Zimmer) are in Part 18.

  • Say where something is with im + room: Im Schlafzimmer findet man ein Bett. In der Küche findet man eine Mikrowelle.

3. Floors and Where You Live

im Erdgeschosson the ground flooron the first floor
im ersten Stock / in der ersten Etageon the first flooron the second floor
im zweiten Stockon the second flooron the third floor
im Dachgeschossin the attic flatin the attic apartment

Ich wohne im dritten Stock. Wir wohnen in einem Altbau. Die Wohnung hat drei Zimmer, eine Küche, ein Bad und einen Balkon. In German flat ads, Zimmer counts the living rooms and bedrooms, not the kitchen and bathroom.

4. Adjectives and Opposites

Learn adjectives in pairs. After sein they never change their form: Das Haus ist groß. Die Küche ist klein.

PairExample

Other useful ones for a home: gemütlich (cosy), praktisch, bequem (comfortable), schön, hässlich (ugly), sauber (clean), schmutzig (dirty).

5. Giving Your Opinion: sehr, zu, Wie findest du …?

QuestionAnswer
Wie findest du den Sessel?Ich finde ihn sehr bequem.
Wie findest du das Sofa?Ich finde es zu groß.
Wie findest du die Lampe?Ich finde sie schön.
Wie findest du die Stühle?Ich finde sie nicht so schön.
Wie gefällt dir die Wohnung?Sie gefällt mir sehr gut.
  • finden takes the Akkusativ, so der Sessel becomes ihn (Part 8). With gefallen the thing is the subject (Part 10).
  • Grade the adjective with nicht, sehr or zu: Das Sofa ist nicht groß / groß / sehr groß / zu groß. zu means too much for you, so it is a complaint.

6. Confusion Points

  • “der erste Stock is the ground floor.” das Erdgeschoss is the ground floor. der erste Stock is the floor above it. One course answer key gives das Erdgeschoss / der erste Stock as the same thing.
  • “zu means very.” sehr groß is very big. zu groß is too big, so it is a problem.
  • “alt has one opposite.” For things it is alt ≠ neu or alt ≠ modern, for people alt ≠ jung.
  • “Ich finde der Sessel bequem.” finden takes the Akkusativ: Ich finde den Sessel bequem. Ich finde ihn bequem.
  • “Die Möbel ist neu.” die Möbel is plural: Die Möbel sind neu.
  • “der Kissen.” Kissen (cushion) is neuter: das Kissen. One course answer key prints der.
  • “Margot trägt viele Schminke.” Schminke (make-up) cannot be counted, so use viel: Sie trägt viel Schminke. One course answer key writes viele.
  • “Die Wohnung hat 3 Zimmer, so it has three rooms in total.” In a flat ad the kitchen and bathroom are not counted. A 3-Zimmer-Wohnung has three living rooms and bedrooms plus a kitchen and bathroom.

7. Quick-Reference Summary

  • Housing: die Wohnung, das Haus, das Wohnheim, der Altbau. auf dem Land ≠ in der Stadt.
  • Rooms: das Wohnzimmer, das Schlafzimmer, die Küche, das Bad, der Flur.

  • Floors: im Erdgeschoss = ground floor. im ersten Stock = one floor up.
  • Adjectives: learn in pairs. After sein they take no ending.
  • Opinion: Wie findest du den Sessel? Ich finde ihn (zu) teuer. Die Wohnung gefällt mir.
